LABELS
During our break-out session at IMW Labels had a really interesting discussion on the benefits of shared research and creating shared opportunities.
We concluded that the best way we can represent the needs of our sector and provide a foundation with which to lobby on our sector’s behalf would be to commission research to establish what our gross value added numbers are. This would include information on value of masters released, copyright, OCC sales, streaming numbers, number of plays on national and international radio, value of contracts and work for hire generated by recording, mastering, art design, marketing, promotion, live etc.
Besides highlighting common issues, resources, educational needs, skill gaps and also highlighting strengths in our business, the facts and figures will provide us with information that can help us organise and lobby on behalf of our members. We plan to explore and identify potential avenues for funding, and seek to get tax and/or grant benefits that are available to labels in other countries, by first researching models that AIM members in other territories can avail of. E.G. UKTI investment in labels.
We plan to use our collective bargaining power to create opportunities for member labels with service providers, music users and broadcasters and already we are sharing good ideas, network and best practice.
We plan to build a mailing list of copyright users, such as music supervisors, advertising agencies, film producers and cultural and tourism ambassadors that we can collectively pitch our copyrights to, and increase awareness of the wealth of Irish independent artists available. We plan to explore the benefits that third party productions would get from using Irish owned masters and talent and align ourselves with Screen Ireland and others in pre-production phases. Armed with this information we aim to create a monthly newsletter featuring highlighted tracks to share for synchronisation. We will also gain contacts from AIM UK’s synch guide and reach out to other territories for similar info.
